The Visegrad Group (V4) expects the new European Commission to speed up European Union enlargement, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday.

“One of the greatest failures of the previous European Commission headed by Jean-Claude Juncker was bringing the enlargement process to an almost complete standstill”, he said after meeting his V4 counterparts in Prague. The Finnish presidency, he added, “made a huge failure in this regard as well.” Szijjarto also noted that the outgoing Finnish EU presidency had not opened a single new negotiating chapter for enlargement during its six-month term ending on 31 December. This, he said, had never happened before.
